Today, Congressman Bob Latta of Ohio’s 5th District voted in favor of the Energy and Commerce budget reconciliation markup. In a statement, Latta expressed his satisfaction with the vote, highlighting its focus on Medicaid strengthening, American energy dominance, and reducing fraud and abuse within the federal government.
Latta stated: “I’m pleased to have joined my Energy and Commerce colleagues in voting to strengthen Medicaid, prioritize American energy dominance, and reduce fraud and abuse in the Federal government through the reconciliation process. This legislation reflects our commitment to advancing fiscally responsible policies that prioritize effective and efficient use of American taxpayer dollars by fortifying the Medicaid system for generations to come, unleashing American energy while opening spectrum for auction, and refilling our strategic petroleum reserve.”
He emphasized that the bill supports innovation in American industry while eliminating spending associated with what he described as “Green New Deal-style waste.” He criticized actions by the previous administration that he believes weakened protections against fraud by broadening Medicaid coverage to include able-bodied unemployed adults. According to Latta, this diverted resources from those who truly need them.
“Our bill corrects Biden’s harmful spending and ensures that taxpayer dollars are prioritized for hard working Americans,” he said. “I will continue to work with my colleagues and President Trump to use American taxpayer dollars effectively while making life easier, safer, and more affordable in Ohio and across the nation. The American people are counting on us, and we will deliver the results.”
The reconciliation process allows for expedited consideration of certain tax, spending, and debt limit legislation. It does not mention cuts to Social Security or Medicare. According to the Congressional Budget Act of 1974’s Byrd Rule, social security cannot be changed through reconciliation.
