City of Tiffin recently issued the following announcement.
MAINTENANCE OF SIDEWALKS IS PROPERTY OWNER’S RESPONSIBILITY
As winter weather has finally arrived, the City of Tiffin is providing a friendly reminder to residents that it is the property owner’s responsibility to maintain and clear sidewalks abutting their property.
According to Tiffin City Ordinance 11-16, “It shall be the duty of the owner of each and every parcel of real estate in the City abutting upon any sidewalk to keep such sidewalk abutting his premises free and clear of snow and ice and to remove therefrom all snow and ice accumulated thereon within a reasonable time, which will not exceed twelve (12) hours after the abatement of any storm during which snow and ice may have accumulated.”
When clearing sidewalks and driveways with snow blowers or plows, residents should take care that the snow is not deposited in the street, alleyways, or on someone else’s property.
Additionally, residents should know where the fire hydrants closest to their property are and make sure they are easily accessible by emergency services. Remove any snow and ice about three feet surrounding the fire hydrant and clear a path from the hydrant to the street. This will lessen response times by crews in case of an emergency.
