TIFFIN FIRE IS SECOND DEPARTMENT IN STATE TO PURCHASE EQUIPMENT
TIFFIN, Ohio – April 25, 2022 – April 20, Tiffin Fire/Rescue Division took delivery of a Solo Rescue personal protective equipment (PPE) washer, becoming just the second fire department in Ohio to have this equipment. This investment was made to improve the safety of the firefighters as it will help eliminate the carcinogens encountered at fire scenes.
The Solo Rescue cleans protective gear of residue from combustion gases, soot particles and other toxins in minutes, significantly less than the amount of time it takes to clean these items compared to hand washing. PPE that may be cleaned in the washer include breathing apparatus (including canisters and masks), helmets, gloves and boots.
Fire Chief Rob Chappell said, “Every once in a while I can look back and think I may have just made a difference. Today is one of those days. This new washer will help to protect the people I am fortunate enough to work with every day.”
Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz said, “I’m glad that we were able to make this investment in the health of our firefighters. Cancer rates are much higher for those with careers as firefighters and this piece of equipment should go a long way toward reducing firefighter cancer rates in Tiffin.”
