Tiffin University Hosts Fourth Annual Pitch Competition

Last week, Tiffin University hosted the fourth annual pitch competition, inviting marketing students from TU, Calvert High School and Heidelberg University. Dr. Kellie McGilvray, Professor of Marketing and Assistant Dean for Online Learning and Graduate Programs, facilitated the event, as part of the students’ final project of the semester.

The competition acted as the culmination of an entire semester of hard work, wherein student teams identified the need for a product or service, came up with a business plan addressing said need, researched current industry trends, designed branded logos and slogans and calculated manufacturing costs. Finalists presented their business ideas to a room full of potential clients and then judges were allowed to ask additional questions after the presentations.

Cash prizes were awarded to each of the finalists, with the first-place prize of $1,000, generously donated by Jeff Knedler, President of Hempy Water. Winners were selected by a group of business-minded community leaders. Knedler met with each of the groups throughout the semester, coaching them through the business plan process.

McGilvray said “I have alumni that credits this course and experience with successfully gaining employment in their field. It is exciting that TU supports me and our students in these events. Most importantly the mentorship that Jeff Knedler provides these students is priceless. He truly cares about the students and he pushes them to their potential which allows them to achieve the ‘Ah-ha’ moments. We make a great team in making this event bigger and better each year and we are already planning for next year.”

Knedler followed up by saying, “I am excited to provide an opportunity that challenges conventional wisdom and changes lives in a positive way, at the same time.”

The top projects selected were “Baltrak,” “Chillow” and “The Flowbrush,” all from Calvert High School; “The Dragon Wagon” from Tiffin University and “The Hangout” from Heidelberg University.
