College Credit Plus (CCP) allows students from all over the state to take college-level courses at or from UF, for college credit while still in high school. Most students are happy to learn the materials, take the tests, and earn credits toward a degree. However, students at St. Francis DeSales in Columbus put their UF Calculus skills to good use, helping to surprise younger students.

Students in St. Francis DeSales High School studied the design of boxes and worked at applying their differential calculus to figure out the dimensions of a box that held 980 cc, but was constructed so that they used the least amount of material for the box. Once calculated, the boxes were built and filled with valentines, candy, notes, and small toys that were 3D printed by a senior CAD/calculus student.

In total, more than 70 boxes were delivered to the children of St. Stephen’s Community House. University of Findlay associate professor of mathematics, and calculus Faculty Liaison for St. Francis, Daniel Baczkowski, Ph.D., is proud of his CCP students. “This was one of the most pleasing projects that I have seen. Not only was this great for the calculus and charity, but the students demonstrated a good understanding of the background material,” Baczkowski said.

Following the annual report from 2021-2022, UF found itself at the top of the list of rankings, remaining the number one private provider of College Credit Plus in the state of Ohio.
