Thanks to a Meghan Bame single to centerfield, HU was a walk-off winner in game one over Albion, 4-3. Payton Scheid went the distance in her first start of the season. Game two was called in the fourth inning due to rain as Heidelberg led 11-0.
Following an Albion error and a Hanna Blasinsky bunt single, sophomore Jade Torres played small ball and bunted both runners into scoring position. With one out in the inning, Bame came to the plate and laced one to center field for a walk-off winner for HU.
Heidelberg got things started early in the first inning. Blasinsky led things off with a single to left field. Bame came to the dish, doubling to left center bringing a runner home. With two outs, Jessica Voitko singled home Bame making it 2-0 after one.
In the home half of the third, an Albion fielding error following an Emma Dean single allowed the HU runner to score from first to stretch the Heidelberg lead to 3-0.
The Britons got a run on the board in the fourth off a two-out single from Dylan Cardinale.
The top of the sixth inning saw Albion threatening. A leadoff single from Megan Maiuri, and a single by Parker Douglass gave the Brits life. A sacrifice bunt moved runners over with one out.
The next hitter flew out to left field, and with the runner on third trying to tag up and score, Blasinsky showed off her cannon and threw her out at the plate. HU got out of the inning unscathed.
With runners on first and second with no outs, a Maddison Shannahan single allowed a runner to score, cutting the Albion deficit to just one. Jacqueline Jozefczyk bunt singled to third base allowing the tying run to score.
With no outs in the inning, Scheid locked in on the circle. Forcing a ground ball out, a fly ball to center field, and striking the last batter out, things remained tied at 3-3.
After giving up the lead, HU was ready to win it in the final inning. With a runner on first due to an Albion error, a Blasinsky bunt single put the winning run on second. Torres did her job with a sacrifice bunt to third, moving the runner 60 feet from home. Bame came in clutch with the walk-off single to win the game for Heidelberg.
Heidelberg, now 6-9, will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Alma College for two. Game one is set for 2 p.m. with the second to follow.
