COLUMBUS – State Representative Riordan McClain, Chairman of the House Transportation Committee, is emphasizing the significance of National School Bus Safety Week, which took place from October 16 to October 20. In light of this important week, McClain is urging motorists to familiarize themselves with school bus laws to ensure the safety of students, bus drivers, and other motorists on the road.

"To protect students, bus drivers, and motorists, it is crucial that school bus laws are followed," said McClain. "Students should be sure to look both ways when getting off the bus, and motorists should adhere to traffic laws. It's a team effort to ensure everyone gets to and from school safely."

During this week, it is essential to be mindful of specific school bus safety reminders. One important rule is that if a bus is stopped on a street with four or more lanes, only traffic going in the same direction as the bus must stop. Additionally, motorists must stop no less than 10 feet behind a school bus. Even if the stop sign arm is not extended on the side of the bus, when the red lights on a bus flash, vehicles must be fully stopped. It is crucial to remember not to pass a school bus unless the bus driver signals you to do so.

The importance of school bus safety cannot be overstated. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, there have been 6,298 school bus-related traffic crashes in Ohio since 2018. Tragically, these accidents have resulted in eight fatalities, one of which was a school bus occupant, and 1,982 injuries.

As National School Bus Safety Week comes to a close, it is essential for motorists to continue practicing safe driving habits when sharing the road with school buses. By following the laws and guidelines put in place to protect students and all those involved in school transportation, we can ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safely.
