The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that it will be increasing its oversight of the Sunny Farms Landfill in Fostoria. This decision comes after concerns raised by constituents in Seneca County regarding the landfill's operations and their potential impact on the community.

State Senator Bill Reineke, representing Tiffin, acknowledges the concerns expressed by the constituents and emphasizes the importance of transparency and the well-being of the citizens. Senator Reineke states, "Constituents in Seneca County have come to me with consistent concerns over the oversight of Sunny Farms. This step from the Ohio EPA moves us towards better transparency and protections for our citizens, who deserve to know their health and quality of life are safe."

Starting from December 1, 2023, the Ohio EPA will have staff present at the Sunny Farms Landfill on a regular basis to closely monitor site operations and associated activities. These activities will be in accordance with state laws, regulations, permits, and orders. The agency's work will include various aspects of oversight to ensure compliance and environmental safety.

The Ohio EPA staff will conduct observations of sampling as required by the facility's groundwater monitoring plan and explosive gas monitoring plan. They will also inspect facility operations, including rail waste offloading, daily cover, construction, and maintenance of engineered components, three times a week. Additionally, they will observe sampling required by the facility's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit and inspect stormwater controls twice a month. To address concerns related to emissions and odors, the staff will inspect emission control units and conduct odor surveillance once per month. Furthermore, the agency will continue to visit the site two days per month to maintain offsite air monitors.

To ensure effectiveness, the Ohio EPA will evaluate the onsite work on a monthly basis and make adjustments as necessary. This increased oversight aims to provide reassurance to the community and to address any potential environmental issues associated with the landfill.

Overall, the Ohio EPA's decision to enhance oversight at the Sunny Farms Landfill reflects their commitment to protecting the environment and the well-being of Ohio residents. By actively monitoring the landfill's operations, the agency is taking proactive steps to ensure transparency, compliance, and the safety of the community.
