State Representative Jon Cross (R-Findlay) held a press conference today, alongside members of Governor DeWine’s Administration, to discuss upcoming legislation aimed at promoting seatbelt safety. The proposed bill will reclassify the failure to wear a seatbelt or properly secure a child in the appropriate booster seat or seat belt from a secondary offense to a primary one.

Cross stated, “The goal of this legislation is to save lives and to increase safety on our roads. Many other states have made not wearing a seat belt a primary offense and it’s time for Ohio to follow suit.”

Statistics from AAA reveal that in 2023, 49,768 out of the 252,000 crashes reported to the Ohio State Highway Patrol involved unbelted individuals. Furthermore, Ohio was identified as one of ten states with the lowest seat belt use at 80.8% in 2022.

The legislation is currently awaiting assignment of a bill number and House committee.
