COLUMBUS – State Rep. Anita Somani (D-Dublin) today celebrated Governor Mike DeWine’s decision to veto the controversial House Bill (HB) 68, framing it as a victory for Ohio’s LGBTQ+ children, the broader community, and parental rights.
“Thank you, Governor DeWine, for understanding that government needs to stay out of medical decisions. Parents deserve to make decisions that are right for their children and family, without fear of government interference. This is a victory for all trans youth and their families in Ohio,” said Rep. Somani.
Rep. Somani and her House Democratic colleagues had previously urged Gov. DeWine to veto the legislation in a Dec. 16 letter stating, “Hate, as you yourself have said, has no place in this state.” They argued that HB 68 addressed a non-existent problem with detrimental solutions. The veto reaffirms the belief that all Ohioans should have the right to make their own healthcare decisions.
