Congressman Bob Latta presented a Bronze Star to William Young, a veteran from Paulding County, for his service in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Young was part of 'B' Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, Military Police Brigade.
The award is part of an initiative led by Latta's office and members of 'B' Company to obtain recognition for their actions during the war. The Department of the Army acknowledged that the unit's efforts were crucial to the success of the 720th MP Battalion, resulting in the awarding of Bronze Stars.
Last year, Latta organized a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol where 35 Vietnam Veterans received their Bronze Stars. To date, 74 Bronze Stars have been awarded to 'B' Company members.
"It was a true honor to present a Bronze Star to Mr. William Young, a Paulding County resident, who honorably served our great nation in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War," Latta stated. He highlighted Young's transition from Military Policeman to participating in infantry missions as part of the Bushwhackers and noted the challenges they faced in receiving appropriate recognition.
Latta's involvement began three years ago after receiving Robert Bogison's book "Up Close & Personal," which documented 'B' Company's history and appealed for assistance in obtaining Combat Infantry Badge (CIB) recognition. Despite being classified as Military Police, they conducted infantry operations on front lines.
Efforts included contacting the U.S. Department of Defense and Department of the Army for documentation supporting their claims. After extensive searches and consideration of provided evidence, it was concluded that 'B' Company's actions warranted recognition with Bronze Stars.
