The Ohio Senate has approved House Bill 308, which redefines nuclear energy as green energy in an effort to boost energy production. The bill is backed by State Senator Bill Reineke, who chairs the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

"Ohio and our country are facing a challenge to generate enough energy to keep our grid reliable for homes and businesses," Reineke stated. "All energy is good energy, and this bill recognizes that fact and encourages the continued use and development of nuclear power in Ohio."

During its passage through the Senate committee, House Bill 308 was amended to extend the standard lease term for state agencies leasing oil and gas rights on state-managed or owned property from three years to five years. It also revises the reimbursement formula for the Broadband Pole Replacement and Undergrounding Program, aiming to improve internet access in underserved areas. Additionally, it clarifies existing law allowing local health boards to use construction and demolition debris fees for landfill waste monitoring.

"These changes will help numerous people in rural America access the internet for their jobs, education, and other needs," Reineke noted. "Notably, the clarification on current law for construction and demolition fees is the first step to help Seneca County and other areas have stronger oversight of waste in their communities."

The bill now moves back to the Ohio House for a concurrence vote.
