The House Energy and Commerce Committee has moved forward with two legislative proposals introduced by Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH5), namely the ROUTERS Act and the National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA) Reauthorization Act. These bills seek to enhance the security and accessibility of American telecommunications networks.
The ROUTERS Act aims to protect U.S. communications infrastructure from technology controlled by foreign adversaries, specifically targeting equipment like routers and modems. This act had previously gained approval in the House during the last congressional session.
Similarly, the NTIA Reauthorization Act, which seeks to modernize the agency by reauthorizing it for the first time in three decades, passed the House previously as well. Its objective is to improve spectrum management and update the scope and responsibilities of the NTIA.
Congressman Latta expressed satisfaction with the committee’s decision, emphasizing the importance of the legislation: “I’m pleased that the Energy and Commerce Committee has advanced my legislation to protect Americans from cyber threats posed by foreign-adversary controlled technology and to reauthorize the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, a crucial agency that ensures the security and advancement of the U.S. telecommunications infrastructure,” said Latta. He further urged the rest of the House to endorse the bills when presented for a vote.
