Tiffin University Students Volunteer at NFL Game in Mexico City

Last month, Tiffin University business students Maria Gavaria, Adrian Martinez and Norberto Flores traveled to Mexico City, Mexico to volunteer as event security for the NFL football game between the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers at the Estadio Azteca Stadium. The students were chaperoned by Javier Vasquez, spouse of Dr. Sandra Geringer, Executive Assistant to the Provost and Associate Professor of Management, Dr. Diego Hernandez, who had the following to say about the trip:

“There is this excitement when you are part of an international football game’s staff. We talk a lot about the games and players, but seeing an international game in person is something that gets me electrified.”

The students were chosen for this position primarily for their bilingualism and ability to act as translators during the event. They were trained and supervised by a management team from Landmark Event Services. In addition to translating on behalf of Landmark, they also worked to ensure that only those with the proper clearance were permitted entry into certain areas of the stadium, and to verify the credentials of those seeking entry upon their arrival. They acted as the first point of contact with the public, members of the media and third-party vendors, so that representatives from the NFL could focus on successfully executing the event.

According to the chaperones, the experience afforded students the opportunity to gain a real inside view of game operations and security for a major event while also enjoying the linguistics, architecture, customs and cuisine of Mexico.
